THE YEAR OF THE AMERICAN INDIAN IN ALABAMA

The Year of the American Indian in Alabama celebrates the culture and heritage of Native Americans by recognizing excellent events, programs and exhibits held during 1998. Alabama's state-recognized tribes, museums and other historical and cultural agencies joined together with the Alabama Indian Affairs Commission, compiling this calendar of events. To Help our state's disadvantaged Native American students, many organizations will donate money from their events to the Alabama Indian Scholarship Fund.

Festivals, Fairs & Pow Wows
Festivals, Fairs & Pow Wows represent the heart of Native American celebrations. These events evolved from older Native American ceremonies which often celebrated the planting or harvesting of crops. Attended by Native Americans from all over the country, nearly every culturally-oriented museum and state recognized tribe holds one or more of these gatherings.
