Welcome to Fairview -- a school with over 800 students in grades Pre K-eight. We are located in Sylva, a small town in Western North Carolina in the Blue Ridge Mountains. Last year, our highly qualified staff of fifty-five teachers completed over 2,000 hours of professional development. Because of our school-university partnership with Western Carolina University, our student teachers, called interns, spend a full year with a master teacher at Fairview. In 1994 (?) we were named as a North Carolina Physical Education Demonstration School, the only Pre k-8 school in the nation to have that designation. For the past three years, our school has focused on developing a large part of our campus as an outdoor environmental classroom which we call WildWatch. Much of that work was highlighted in our curriculum fair. We have a very active PTA which coordinates our parent volunteers. Browse our site and learn more about Fairview School, Eagles for Excellence.
In 1995, Fairview Elementary and Western Carolina University agreed to enter into a school/university partnership to provide direct benefits to public school students, to provide a better trained cadre of teachers, and to conduct action research. Students from the university spend a year long internship at Fairview; they are there for the opening as well as the closing of school. University classes are taught on site at Fairview by college personnel as well as Fairview teachers who are adjunct faculty members. Student interns work with a master teacher for an entire school year and gain invaluable experience in classroom management, instructional delivery, and professional camaraderie.
